After You Fly Home from Turkey: Follow-Up, the Written Guarantee and Your Dentist at Home
Most of what comes up after you fly home is small, and is settled with a message and a photograph. Follow-up runs on WhatsApp, answered at any hour by the clinic that treated you. Your own dentist at home can do check-ups, hygiene, a bite adjustment and emergency care. Behind all of it sits a written guarantee: 10 years on implants, 5 years on crowns and veneers.
What is normal in the first weeks, and what is not?
Nobody books a flight looking forward to complications, but the question that keeps people awake is who picks up the phone in eight months. It is fair to ask about dental treatment in Turkey. The table below is general guidance, not a diagnosis: what is happening in your mouth is decided by a dentist who has looked at it.
| What you notice | Usually | Message the clinic if |
|---|---|---|
| Tender gum around a new implant | Common in the first days, settling steadily | Day 4 is worse than day 2, or swelling comes with a fever |
| A new crown or veneer feels high | Common while the bite settles | It still feels high after a week |
| Cold sensitivity on a prepared tooth | Common for some weeks, usually fading | It turns constant, throbs, or wakes you at night |
| Food catching between new crowns | Worth raising at your next check-up | Floss shreds or jams in the same gap every time |
| A chip on a crown or veneer edge | Rarely urgent | Always, photographed before anything else changes |
Two rules cover the rest. Anything getting worse rather than better after the first few days is worth a message, and so is anything that appears suddenly, weeks or months after you healed. The awkward cases are never the early ones but the ones that arrive six months late. If you are still on holiday, our guide to swimming, flying and eating after dental treatment takes those first days in order.
How does follow-up work once you are home?
The number you were given, +90 530 575 47 18, is a WhatsApp number answered at any hour, every day. Not a ticket queue, not a call centre in a third country. English, German, Russian and Turkish are spoken in the clinic, so you can describe the problem in your own words.
What happens to the message matters more than how quickly it is read. Your written plan, the digital X-rays taken in the chair and the photographs from your check-up day sit on file under your name, and Dt. Mustafa Yunusoğlu reviews every case personally. The person looking at your photograph knows which implant went in and how your bite looked on the day you flew home. The team in Side is three dentists, with implant surgery carried out by a dental surgeon specialising in implantology.
The honest limit: a photograph shows a surface. It cannot show what is happening under the gum, inside a root or around the threads of an implant. Often the right reply is not reassurance but an instruction: see a dentist near you this week, ask for a small X-ray, and send us what they find.

What should I photograph, and how?
Good photographs end the conversation in one exchange; poor ones turn it into three days of guessing.
- Daylight, not the bathroom light. Stand near a window and face it; overhead lighting throws exactly the shadow that hides a gum line.
- Move the lip or cheek out of the way with a clean finger, so the edge where tooth meets gum is visible.
- Three photographs, not one. Teeth together from the front, the same area with the mouth open, then a close-up from 15 to 20 cm. Tap the screen on the tooth so the phone focuses there and not on your lips.
- Put the history in one message: when it started, whether it is improving or worsening, and what sets it off, such as cold, heat or pressure.
Not sure whether what you are looking at is normal? Send a photograph and we will tell you honestly, including when the answer is that it needs a dentist in the room rather than a screen.
What can my own dentist at home do?
More than most people assume. A dentist anywhere can examine you, take an X-ray, clean around crowns and implants, polish down a bite that sits a fraction high, re-cement a crown that came off in one piece, and deal with an emergency out of hours. None of it needs the person who did the original work, and routine hygienist appointments are the one part of long-term care no clinic abroad can provide.
The less comfortable half is that some dentists at home are reluctant to touch work carried out elsewhere. It is usually not spite: they did not plan the case, so they are being asked to take responsibility for a result they did not design, and may not know which implant system is in the bone. Components are not interchangeable between manufacturers, so they cannot order the right part blind. You cannot change that, but you can remove its practical half, which is what the documents are for. Ask your own dentist, before you book anything, whether they will see you for check-ups afterwards. Our guide on whether dental treatment in Turkey is safe covers the rest of that homework.
Which documents should I ask for before I leave?
Ask any clinic, anywhere, for these three before you fly. One that gets vague has told you something.
- The written treatment plan, item by item, stating what was done rather than one line on a receipt. At Dentist Side Turkey the plan arrives before you travel and is confirmed in writing after the examination and digital X-ray in Side.
- The list of materials, including the implant brand: which implant system was placed, and which ceramic the crowns or veneers were made from. We place Nobel Biocare and Straumann implants, which a dentist in Europe can look up and order components for.
- Copies of the X-rays taken at the clinic, as image files rather than a photograph of a monitor. The one from the day the work finished is the baseline every future X-ray is compared against.
Add the guarantee document to the same folder, on your phone and somewhere else. Our list of questions to ask a Turkish dental clinic covers what else to establish before you book.

What does the written guarantee actually mean?
At Dentist Side Turkey the guarantee is written: 10 years on implants, 5 years on crowns and veneers. It is a document with wording in it, not a line on a web page.
We do not set out its terms here, and you should be wary of any paraphrase, ours included. The wording in your hands is what counts. Ask to read it before you travel rather than after you land. Any clinic can send it, and reading it is how you learn what it does and does not do while every option is still open. The same goes for any clinic you are weighing up, at home or abroad.
A guarantee is not a substitute for follow-up. It is the backstop behind it; what keeps work in service day to day is hygiene and check-ups. The dental implants and dental crowns pages set out the brands and ceramics we use.
When is going back the right call?
Most questions end with a message. A few need hands.
- Anything involving the implant itself, or the fit of a fixed bridge on implants, belongs with the people who placed it.
- A crown or veneer that needs remaking rather than repairing, because shade, shape and bite were designed as a set.
- A bite that still feels wrong after a local adjustment, or an aesthetic result photographs cannot settle.
The clinic is open all year, Monday to Saturday from 09:00 to 19:00, closed on Sunday, about 1 hour by car from Antalya Airport. Most people who come back fold the visit into a trip they were taking anyway.
The day that does most to prevent a return trip is the last one before your flight. It is a check-up day rather than a procedure day, placed after you have eaten a couple of real meals on the new teeth. The bite is checked again under real use, contacts are flossed and adjusted, edges polished, and photographs go on file. Anything needing a change is changed while you are still in the chair. The treatment timetable shows where that day sits.
What keeps the work alive over the years?
Restorations rarely fail mysteriously. They fail at the gum line, under grinding forces, or through neglect that took years to show.
- Clean around the work, not only on it: twice a day, with interdental brushes or floss where the gum meets a crown, a bridge or an implant. Implants are lost through the gum and bone around them, not through the titanium.
- Keep a recall interval. A 2016 systematic review in the Journal of Dental Research found reason to claim a minimum peri-implant maintenance interval of 5 to 6 months, and reported peri-implantitis at a frequency from 1% to 47% at implant level.
- A night guard if you grind. Clenching sits behind a large share of chipped ceramic; the NHS page on teeth grinding lists the signs.
- Do not sit on a small change, and keep your teeth off packaging, bottle tops and ice. A gum that bleeds in one spot is far easier to deal with early than late.
Here is the concession. No clinic, in Turkey or your own town, can promise that nothing will ever need adjusting. Results vary from person to person: ceramic chips, gums recede, bites shift, and the review above stresses that complications occur even where maintenance is in place. What can be promised is procedural: a written plan, a written guarantee, documents you can hand to any dentist, and a number answered at any hour. If something about your own case is on your mind, wherever you were treated, send a photograph and ask. The questions we are asked most are on one page, and every way to reach the clinic is on another.
Frequently Asked Questions
What if something goes wrong with my dental work after I go back home?
Message the clinic on WhatsApp with photographs, on +90 530 575 47 18, which is answered at any hour. Your plan, X-rays and check-up photographs are on file, so the dentist who treated you can see what has changed. Most questions are settled that way. Some need examining in person, and the reply may be to see a dentist near you and send on what they find.
Will my dentist at home treat work done in Turkey?
Many will, for check-ups, hygiene, bite adjustment and emergency care, none of which needs the original dentist. Some are reluctant to take responsibility for a case they did not plan, particularly if they do not know which implant system is in the bone. Taking home the treatment plan, the list of materials with the implant brand and copies of your X-rays removes most of that difficulty. Ask before you travel.
What documents should I take home from a dental clinic abroad?
Ask any clinic for three things: the written treatment plan item by item, the list of materials including the implant brand and the ceramic used, and copies of the X-rays as image files rather than photographs of a screen. Add the written guarantee document. Keep them together, on your phone and in one other place.
How long is the guarantee at Dentist Side Turkey?
It is a written guarantee of 10 years on implants and 5 years on crowns and veneers. It is a document rather than a sentence on a website, and you can ask to read its wording before you travel. Reading the document itself is the point, because no summary of it, including this one, is what you would actually be relying on.
Is a chipped or high-feeling crown normal after treatment?
A new crown or veneer commonly feels slightly high for a few days while the bite settles, and that usually passes. If it still feels high after a week, or one tooth is taking all the pressure, send a message. A chip is not usually urgent but is always worth reporting, with a photograph taken before anything else changes.
How often should I have a check-up after implants?
Your own dentist sets the interval after examining you. As a reference point, a 2016 systematic review in the Journal of Dental Research found reason to claim a minimum peri-implant maintenance interval of 5 to 6 months. Those appointments are for the gum and bone around the implant, which is where implants are lost, rather than for the titanium itself.
Do I have to fly back to Turkey if there is a problem?
Usually not. Most questions are answered by message, and check-ups, hygiene, bite adjustment and emergency relief can be handled by a dentist near you. A return visit makes sense for the implant itself, the fit of a fixed bridge, a crown that needs remaking, or a bite problem a local adjustment has not solved. The check-up day before your flight exists to catch such things earlier.
