What to Expect from Crowns in Side
When a crown is the right answer
A crown covers the whole tooth, so it is the right choice for a tooth that is broken, heavily filled, cracked or root-treated. It is the wrong choice for a healthy front tooth that only needs a better colour or shape, where a veneer or bonding removes far less: in a laboratory study, crown preparations removed about 63‑72% of the visible tooth, against 3‑30% for veneers. Zirconia, E-max or porcelain?
Monolithic zirconia is the strongest option and suits back teeth and bridges. E-max glass-ceramic is the most translucent and suits front teeth. Porcelain layered over a zirconia core combines the two for visible teeth that also need strength. Modern zirconia crowns last 15 years or more with good care. See our guide to E-max or zirconia.
If the tooth needs a root canal first
A painful or dead tooth is treated first: the canals are cleaned and sealed, and the crown follows, often within the same stay. If your X-ray suggests this, the written plan says so before you travel. See root canal treatment in Side.
Your stay, step by step
- First appointment: examination and digital X-ray, then preparation of the tooth, a scan or impressions and a temporary crown.
- Laboratory days: the crown is designed and milled with CAD/CAM in 3‑5 days while you enjoy Side.
- Fitting: try-in, adjustments and cementation, then a bite check before your flight. The whole visit takes 5‑7 days.
Living with a temporary crown
A temporary crown protects the prepared tooth and keeps your smile presentable, but it is held with a weaker cement on purpose. Chew on the other side where you can, avoid chewing gum, toffee and very hard foods, and slide floss out sideways rather than pulling it up. If it comes loose, message the clinic: re-cementing takes only minutes.
