Root Canal Treatment

Root Canal Treatment in Side, Antalya: Keeping the Tooth Instead of Pulling It

Toothache that lingers after hot or cold, throbs at night or hurts when you bite often means the nerve inside the tooth is inflamed or infected. A root canal removes the nerve and keeps the tooth. It is done under local anaesthetic, and the treatment itself is not the painful part.

Root canal treatment removes the inflamed or infected pulp from a tooth and keeps the tooth itself. It is done under local anaesthetic and usually takes one or two appointments, depending on the tooth. At Dentist Side Turkey in Side, Antalya, a crown, where needed, takes two visits over 5‑7 days, and a written quote comes within 24 hours.

Straight answers

What is a root canal and do I need one?

Root canal treatment deals with the soft tissue inside a tooth, the pulp, once it has become inflamed or infected through deep decay, a crack or an old filling that has leaked. The dentist removes the damaged pulp, cleans and shapes the canals inside the root, and fills and seals them. The tooth stays in your jaw and keeps doing its job, so extraction, and the gap, bridge or implant that follows it, is avoided.

It is needed when the pulp cannot recover: pain that lingers after hot or cold, throbbing that wakes you at night, pain on biting, a tooth that has darkened, or a gum boil or swelling over the root. Only an examination and an X-ray can confirm it. The treatment itself is not the painful part: it is done under local anaesthetic, and the pain people associate with a root canal is usually the toothache that brought them in.

In general practice a root canal takes one or two appointments, depending on the tooth: back teeth have more canals, and an infected tooth may need time to settle. On a holiday that matters: a root-treated back tooth is usually crowned, a separate job of two visits over 5‑7 days here. Whether both fit one stay is the dentist's call once the tooth has been seen. Signs to watch

How do I know if I need a root canal?

  • Toothache that lingers for minutes after something hot or cold instead of fading at once
  • Throbbing pain that starts or worsens at night and keeps you awake
  • Pain when you bite down or chew on one particular tooth
  • A tooth that has turned grey or darker than its neighbours
  • A pimple or small boil on the gum beside a tooth, sometimes with a bad taste
  • Swelling of the gum, cheek or jaw around one tooth
  • A deep cavity that has reached the nerve, or a cracked tooth
  • A tooth with a large old filling that has started to ache again
  • Pain that suddenly stopped on its own, which can mean the nerve has died rather than healed

Step by step

What happens during root canal treatment?

From the first X-ray to the crown that protects the tooth, and what to do if you fly home in between

  1. 01

    Examination and X-ray

The dentist examines the tooth, checks how it responds to cold and to tapping, and takes an X-ray to see the root and any infection at its tip. You are told whether the tooth can be saved, how many appointments it is likely to need, and the cost, in writing.

  2. 02

Numbing the tooth and cleaning the canals

Local anaesthetic is given first and allowed to take full effect. A small opening is made in the top of the tooth, the inflamed or infected pulp is removed, and the canals are cleaned, shaped and disinfected. Say so if anything hurts; more anaesthetic can be given.

  3. 03

    Filling and sealing the root

Once the canals are clean and dry they are filled with a rubber-like material and sealed to keep bacteria out. In general practice a badly infected tooth may be dressed with a medicament and sealed at a second appointment; whether yours needs that is the dentist's decision.

  4. 04

The crown or filling that protects the tooth

Root-treated teeth are more brittle than live ones. A front tooth may only need a filling; a back tooth usually needs a crown, two visits over 5‑7 days. If you fly home in between, the tooth is sealed and you take a written treatment plan for your dentist.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a root canal hurt?

Not the treatment itself. It is done under local anaesthetic, and once the tooth is numb you should feel pressure and vibration rather than pain. If anything does hurt, say so; more anaesthetic can be given. The pain people remember is usually the toothache before treatment, or a tooth so inflamed it was hard to numb. For a few days afterwards the tooth can be tender to bite on; the dentist tells you what to take for that and when to get in touch.

How long does root canal treatment take?

It depends on the tooth. In general practice a root canal takes one or two appointments: a front tooth with fewer canals is quicker, a back tooth with more canals takes longer, and a tooth with an abscess may need to be dressed and left to settle before it is sealed. The crown that usually follows on a back tooth is a separate job of two visits over 5‑7 days. Send photos on WhatsApp, say how long you are in Side, and the dentist tells you what fits.

Can a root canal be done in one appointment?

In general practice, some can. It depends on how many canals the tooth has, how curved they are, and whether there is active infection at the root tip. An inflamed but not yet infected tooth is more often finished in one sitting; an abscessed tooth may be dressed with a medicament and sealed at a later appointment. That is a decision the dentist makes once your tooth has been examined and X-rayed, not something anyone can honestly promise from a photo.

Do I need a crown after a root canal?

Usually on a back tooth, not always on a front one. Removing the pulp leaves the tooth drier and more brittle, and a molar takes heavy chewing forces, so without a crown it can split, which usually means losing it. A front tooth with most of its structure intact can often be filled instead; the dentist tells you which applies. A crown here takes two visits over 5‑7 days and carries a written guarantee of 5 years; porcelain crowns typically last 10‑15 years, zirconia 15 years or more.

Can I fly after a root canal?

Usually, once the tooth has been sealed, but tell the dentist your flight date before treatment starts. A tooth that is still open, dressed or infected can hurt as cabin pressure changes. If your plan needs a second appointment, the dentist times it around your flight, or tells you plainly if the tooth should be finished before you travel. With a temporary filling, chew on the other side and avoid hard or sticky food until the final filling or crown is in.

Should I have a root canal or just pull the tooth?

A tooth that can be saved is usually worth saving. A root-treated and crowned tooth keeps your own root and needs no months of healing. Extraction is quicker, but an implant to fill the gap means two trips with 2‑4 months of healing between them. Pulling the tooth is right when it is cracked below the gum or too broken to hold a crown. Whatever you have read about teeth pulled abroad that could have been saved, the X-ray decides and you get both options in writing.

How much does root canal treatment cost in Side?

The clinic does not publish a figure, because the cost depends on which tooth it is, how many canals it has, whether it is infected, and whether it needs a crown afterwards. It quotes per case instead. Send a photo of the tooth, or an X-ray if you have one, on WhatsApp or through the contact form, and within 24 hours you receive a written treatment plan with the price for your case, before anything is started.

How long does a root-treated tooth last?

There is no honest number for the tooth itself. A root-treated tooth can last many years; how long depends on whether it was crowned when it needed to be and how well it is cleaned, because it can still decay at the edges. The crown carries a written guarantee of 5 years here; porcelain crowns typically last 10‑15 years and zirconia 15 years or more. Brush and floss it like any other tooth, keep up check-ups, and see a dentist if it becomes tender to bite on.
