Will I be without teeth? Temporaries during veneers, crowns and implants in Turkey
Almost never, and never where it shows. Teeth prepared for veneers or crowns leave the chair the same day with temporaries on them. An implant heals for 2‑4 months, and what fills the gap, a fixed temporary, a removable one or nothing at a back tooth, depends on your case. Agree it in writing before you book flights.
The short answer: am I ever left without teeth?
| Treatment | Ever without teeth? | What you wear meanwhile | For how long |
|---|---|---|---|
| Porcelain veneers | No | Temporary veneers, fitted the same day the teeth are prepared | A few days, inside the one visit of 5‑7 days |
| Crowns | No | Temporary crowns, cemented lightly the same day | A few days, inside the same 5‑7 day visit |
| Single implant | There can be a visible space while it heals | Case by case: a temporary crown where the case allows, a removable temporary, or nothing at a back tooth | 2‑4 months, up to 6 months in the upper jaw |
| Several implants | As above, decided tooth by tooth | A temporary bridge, a removable temporary, or a mix of both | The same healing period |
| All-on-4 | No | A fixed temporary bridge, attached within 24‑72 hours of surgery | Until the final bridge on the second visit |
| Extraction on its own | There is a space from the moment the tooth comes out | A removable temporary where it shows, usually nothing at a back tooth | Until the site has healed |
Those are the usual patterns, not a promise about your mouth: which line applies depends on which teeth are involved and what the X-ray shows, and that is settled after the examination. Everything below is how a trip to our clinic in Side is normally planned, alongside the dental treatment in Turkey page.
Veneers and crowns: what do I wear between preparation and fitting?
Crowns, veneers and smile makeovers are done in one visit of 5‑7 days with two or three appointments. The teeth are prepared at the first working appointment: for E-max porcelain veneers that means taking 0.3‑0.5 mm from the front surface, for crowns it means shaping the tooth on every side, as the post on veneers, crowns or bonding sets out. Before you leave the chair the prepared teeth are covered with temporaries.
This is ordinary dentistry rather than something invented for travelling patients: the Oral Health Foundation describes crown treatment as two visits, the tooth shaped and a temporary fitted at the first, the final crown cemented at the second. Only the calendar changes in Side. The two appointments sit inside one week instead of three, and the days between them are holiday days.
So the week runs: consultation and written plan, preparation and temporaries, two or three laboratory days, the fitting, then a check-up day before the flight. You are never in public without teeth, and you do not fly with a prepared tooth left uncovered. The veneers and crowns pages describe each treatment, and how many days you need has the appointments.
Temporaries are also the first time you see the new length and shape in your own face, while it can still be changed. If the front teeth feel too long or too square, say so on a laboratory day, not at the fitting.
What do temporary teeth look and feel like, honestly?
Unfinished. A temporary crown or veneer is made chairside in a single shade, without the translucency at the edge, the surface texture or the polish of the final work, so close up it reads as flat and too uniform. At the distance you talk to people at, most notice nothing. In a photograph with a flash, you will.
They are also cemented lightly, on purpose: the cement has to release cleanly at the fitting so the prepared tooth underneath is not damaged. That is exactly why a temporary can come off in a crusty bread roll, and it is a design decision rather than a failure.
For a day or two the gums are often tender, the edges feel bulkier to the tongue, and some people have a slight lisp that settles as the tongue learns the new shape. How quickly that happens varies from person to person. If something still feels wrong after two days, say so before the final work is made.
Implants: what fills the gap during the 2‑4 months of healing?
An implant is the one treatment with a genuine waiting period, and it runs over two visits: 3‑5 days in Side for the placement, then 2‑4 months of healing at home, up to 6 months in the upper jaw, then 4‑7 days for the final teeth. The Oral Health Foundation puts the usual healing time at around four months, and says a replacement tooth can sometimes go in on the same day, but that your implant dentist decides.

So what is in the space during those months? There are three general answers, and they are not interchangeable.
- A fixed temporary. A temporary crown, or a small bridge, attached so that it stays in. Possible only where the case allows: the implant has to sit firmly enough in the bone the moment it is placed, and the bite must not load it heavily. That is a judgement made in the chair, on the day.
- A removable temporary. A small plate carrying one or more teeth, taken out at night and to clean. Not elegant, and it takes a few days before you speak with it comfortably, but it fills a space that shows and, made properly, it does not press on the healing implant.
- Nothing. For a molar at the back, many people simply live with the space. Nothing to look after, nothing to lose at the buffet.
Which one applies to you cannot be promised from a photograph: it depends on where the tooth is, what the X-ray shows, whether the site needed grafting, and how your bite closes. Dt. Mustafa Yunusoğlu reviews every written plan, and this belongs in yours in plain words before anything is booked: what will I be wearing when I fly home, and what for the months after?
The hardest case to bridge elegantly is a single implant at the front of the upper jaw. A fixed temporary there is possible in selected cases: a 2023 systematic review in Clinical Oral Implants Research found that it can be predictable in suitable patients. If yours is not one of them, the honest answer is a removable temporary for a few months, a stand-in rather than a preview of the finished tooth. Better to know before the flights are booked.
Not sure which of the three would apply to you? Send a photo of the gap on WhatsApp and we will tell you honestly what we would plan. The dental implants page sets out the stages in full.
All-on-4: do I fly home with teeth?
Yes. A fixed temporary bridge is attached within 24‑72 hours of the surgery, in the same visit, so the treated arch is never empty in public. It is screwed to the implants: you do not take it out, and it is not a plate resting on the gum.
During the healing months it behaves like a set of teeth with conditions attached: a soft diet is commonly advised while the implants integrate, because the bridge is there to hold the shape of the face and let you eat and talk, not to crack walnuts. It is thicker than the final bridge, and speech takes practice. The final bridge is made on the second visit of 4‑7 days; the All-on-4 page and the All-on-4 guide describe both stages.
How do I eat and look after temporaries on holiday?
Treat them as borrowed teeth.
- Nothing hard: crusty bread, nuts, ice, olive stones, corn on the cob.
- Nothing sticky: lokum, toffee, chewing gum.
- Chew on the other side where you can, and cut fruit up rather than biting into it.
- Brush them gently, like any other tooth. Pull floss out sideways instead of back up through the contact, which lifts temporaries off.
- Red wine, coffee and tea stain temporary material quickly. That is harmless, and it leaves with them.
Sun, sea and the pool make no difference to temporaries themselves. After surgery they do, and the rules are different: the post on swimming, sun and flying after dental treatment has that.

What should I do if a temporary comes off?
It happens, usually at dinner. Three things, in order.
- Keep it. Put it somewhere dry and findable: in most cases the same temporary is cleaned and re-cemented in a few minutes. A prepared tooth left uncovered can turn sensitive, and the neighbouring teeth can drift just enough to matter when the final crown arrives.
- Message the clinic. WhatsApp +90 530 575 47 18 is answered at any hour, and the chair is open Monday to Saturday from 09:00 to 19:00. If you are still in Side, come in; it is a short appointment. If you are already home, we will say whether it can wait.
- Do not glue it back yourself. Household adhesives and pharmacy repair kits are not made for the inside of a mouth, and they can make the tooth impossible to clean or stop the final work seating.
Can I go back to work and see people with temporaries?
For most people, yes, the same week. Temporaries are shaped and coloured like teeth, they pass at conversational distance, and video calls are fine. The difference shows in a photograph with a flash, so if there is a wedding in the diary, plan the dates around it.
A removable temporary is a bigger adjustment: it comes out at night, speech takes a few days, and eating takes longer to get used to than people expect. An All-on-4 temporary bridge is the opposite: it is fixed, so you talk and smile normally from the first week and it is the diet that is restricted, not the social life.
The awkward stage is temporary in both senses of the word. To know exactly what you would wear at each point in your own case, send photos and ask for it in writing before you travel; the contact page has the address and the clinic hours.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will I be without teeth during dental treatment in Turkey?
Not in the visible part of the mouth. Teeth prepared for veneers or crowns are covered with temporaries in the same appointment, and with All-on-4 a fixed temporary bridge goes on within 24‑72 hours of surgery. A single implant is the exception: there can be a space while it heals, and what fills it is decided case by case.
What do I wear while a dental implant is healing?
One of three things, depending on the case: a temporary crown or bridge fixed in place where the implant is firm enough and the bite allows it, a small removable temporary that you take out at night, or nothing at all if the tooth is at the back and the space does not show. Ask which one applies to you in writing before you travel.
Do temporary crowns and veneers look natural?
They look like teeth, not like finished work. A temporary is made chairside in one shade, without the translucency, texture and polish of the final crown or veneer, so at conversational distance most people notice nothing and in a close-up photograph you will. They also show you the new shape and length while it can still be changed.
How long do you wear temporary teeth with veneers or crowns?
Only the laboratory days inside the one visit of 5‑7 days. The teeth are prepared and the temporaries fitted at the same appointment, the final veneers or crowns are made while you are on holiday, and they are fitted a few days later. The last day before the flight is a check-up rather than a procedure.
What happens if a temporary crown falls off on holiday?
Keep it, message the clinic, and do not glue it back yourself. Household adhesives and pharmacy repair kits can make the tooth impossible to clean and can stop the final crown seating. In most cases the same temporary is cleaned and re-cemented in a short appointment. WhatsApp +90 530 575 47 18 is answered at any hour, every day.
Do you get teeth on the same day with All-on-4?
A fixed temporary bridge is attached within 24‑72 hours of the surgery, so you fly home with teeth in place rather than with an empty arch. It is screwed to the implants and does not come out. A soft diet is commonly advised during the healing months, and the final bridge is made on the second visit of 4‑7 days.
Can I work and eat normally with temporary teeth?
You can work and talk normally; temporaries pass at conversational distance and on video calls. Eating is where the care goes: nothing hard such as crusty bread, nuts or ice, nothing sticky such as lokum or chewing gum, and chew on the other side where you can. Red wine and coffee stain temporaries, which is harmless.
