Broken Denture on Holiday: What to Do First and How It Is Fixed

Broken Denture on Holiday: What to Do First and How It Is Fixed

If a denture cracks, a tooth comes off it or it rubs so much that you cannot eat, keep every piece, leave household glue alone, do not file or bend anything yourself, and message a dentist the same day. A broken denture is rarely dangerous, but on holiday not being able to eat is a real problem. The dentist tells you what is possible within the days you have in Side, and a clear photo on WhatsApp usually settles the first question.

How urgent is a broken or rubbing denture?

A broken denture rarely harms you, but it takes away eating, speaking and your ease for the rest of the trip. The table shows the usual urgency and route to a fix.

ProblemHow urgentUsual fix
Crack or clean break through the dentureWithin a day or two, sooner if you cannot eatThe dentist checks whether the pieces can be joined or the base needs replacing
A tooth has come off the dentureWithin a day or twoRe-attaching the tooth if the base is sound
Sore spot or small ulcer under the dentureA day or two; the same day if swollen or bleedingEasing the area that presses; leave the denture out meanwhile
Denture loose, slips when you eatNot an emergency, but see a dentist if you cannot eatAdjustment or a new fit; adhesive is not a repair
Broken clasp on a partial dentureWithin a day or twoRepair or replacement of the clasp; do not bend it back
Implant-retained denture loose or clickingWithin a day or twoThe dentist checks the attachments and the implants

The last column is the usual route, not a promise. A worn denture, or one that no longer fits your gums, may need a new base. The dentist decides once they have seen it.

What should you do first?

Take the denture out if it hurts and rinse your mouth with warm salty water. Collect every piece, including small ones and any tooth that came off, and keep them dry in a clean container. The NHS advice is to bring any broken parts to the dentist so they can check whether the denture can be repaired.

Do not stick it together with household glue. Glue sets the pieces slightly out of line, leaves residue on a surface that sits against your gums, and makes a proper repair harder. Do not file, bend or trim a clasp or sharp edge yourself either. Denture adhesive may hold a loose denture in place for a meal, but the ADA says adhesive is not a remedy for an ill-fitting denture.

Until you are seen, eat soft food cut small and chew on the side that does not hurt. If a sharp edge cuts your cheek or tongue, leave the denture out rather than wear it. Then send photos on WhatsApp: the front, the underside that touches the gum, and the pieces side by side. Our emergency dentist page lists a denture or bridge broken or rubbing so you cannot eat among the problems to message us about.

Phone photos show what is visible; a panoramic X-ray shows the roots and bone, which is why the plan relies on both.

Why do dentures break?

Rarely for one reason. In a study of 150 complete-denture wearers who came in with a fractured denture, 42 had dropped it, 40 had a bite problem, 28 a poor fit, 25 a material breakage and 15 a defect in the acrylic base. The most common place to break was the midline (50 of the 150).

A survey of repairs at three dental laboratories, by researchers at the University of Bristol and published in the British Dental Journal in 1994, found that a third (33%) were teeth that had come off the denture and 29% were midline fractures, which were more common in upper complete dentures. These are older figures from one region, but they fit what people describe: a drop onto the bathroom floor, a hard bite on a bone, an old denture on gums that have changed. The NHS notes that gums and jawbone shrink over the years, and suggests cleaning a denture over a sink filled with water or a towel, because it can break if dropped.

How are sore spots and ulcers handled?

The NHS lists badly fitting dentures among the common causes of mouth ulcers, and the ADA says an ill-fitting denture can contribute to mouth sores. The dentist looks at where the denture presses, and the usual answer is to ease that spot, often with a small adjustment of the denture surface. Do not file it yourself, because acrylic cannot be put back.

Most mouth ulcers clear within a week or two. The NHS advice is that an ulcer that lasts longer than 3 weeks should be checked by a dentist or GP, because a long-lasting ulcer is sometimes a sign of mouth cancer. Go sooner if it is bigger than usual, bleeds or becomes more painful and red. If you arrive with an ulcer that is already old, say so, and have it looked at again when you are home.

What can a dentist do while you are on holiday?

Some things are dealt with in one visit, such as easing a sore spot or checking a clasp. Others, such as a repair made in a laboratory or a new denture, depend on the damage and on how many days you have left. We do not promise a repair time before the denture has been seen. The dentist tells you what is possible within your stay and what is better left until you are home, and anything beyond the emergency itself is quoted in writing before it starts.

The chairs run Monday to Saturday from 09:00 to 19:00 and the clinic is closed on Sunday, but WhatsApp is answered at any hour. The clinic is 5‑25 minutes by car from the Side hotel zones, see the dentist near your hotel; for pain rather than a denture, read toothache on holiday.

When is the clinic route not the right choice?

Go to a hospital emergency department if the face or jaw is swelling, especially with a fever or trouble swallowing or breathing; if you think you swallowed or breathed in a piece of the denture; or if the break came with a fall, a blow to the head or bleeding that will not stop. If a problem needs a hospital rather than a dentist, we say so.

Waiting until you are home is reasonable when you fly in a day or two, the damage is a lost tooth or a mild sore spot, and the denture was made by a dentist who holds your records. Then the repair is simplest where it started.

When is an implant-retained or fixed option worth discussing?

Not as a fix for a broken denture on holiday, because implants need months to heal. But if dentures keep breaking or slipping, or you avoid foods because of them, it is worth asking. A 2021 meta-analysis of 8 studies, with around 800 patients, compared a lower denture held by two implants with a conventional lower denture. The implant version scored better for satisfaction, comfort, speech and stability, not for hygiene or appearance.

An implant needs 2‑4 months to fuse with the bone, up to 6 in the upper jaw, so it is a plan for after the holiday rather than for the week you have. Send photos or an X-ray and a written quote arrives within 24 hours; the written implant guarantee runs to 10 years. Read about dental implants, the fixed full-arch option All-on-4, and the comparison in implant, bridge or denture.

Between appointments you wear temporaries, so you are not left without teeth on holiday.

How do you get home with something you can eat with?

Ask the dentist three things before you leave: what has been fixed, what is only temporary, and what to do at home. A repaired or adjusted denture may be enough for the rest of the trip; a temporary solution gets you home so your own dentist can finish it. Our guide to temporary teeth during treatment explains what temporary means in practice, and a crown or filling that fell out covers the similar problem for fixed teeth.

For the journey, carry the denture in a hard case wrapped in a towel in your hand luggage, not loose in a suitcase, and pack soft food for the first meals. Follow-up after you return is covered in after you fly home.

Send photos on WhatsApp and say what happened, when you fly home and whether you can eat. The contact page lists every way to reach us. Results depend on the individual case and the examination.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a broken denture a dental emergency?

Rarely a medical one, but on holiday it matters because you cannot eat or speak comfortably. See a dentist within a day or two, the same day if the denture is cutting your mouth, the area is swollen or bleeding, or you cannot eat at all. Go to a hospital if the face is swelling, you have a fever or trouble breathing, or you may have swallowed a piece.

Can I glue a broken denture with super glue?

No. Household glue sets the pieces slightly out of line, leaves residue on the surface that sits against your gums, and makes a proper repair harder because the broken edges must be clean and fit exactly. Keep all the pieces dry in a container and bring them to the dentist, as the NHS advises.

What should I do with a tooth that came off my denture?

Keep it, with any other pieces, and bring everything. A tooth that has detached from a sound base can often be re-attached. A 1994 survey from Bristol of laboratory repairs found that a third were teeth that had come off, so it is a common problem.

Why do dentures break?

Mostly falls, bite problems, a poor fit and material breakage. In a study of 150 fractured complete dentures, 42 had been dropped, 40 had a bite problem and 28 a poor fit, and the midline was the usual place to break. Gums and jawbone also change over the years, so an old denture loosens and takes more strain.

How long can a denture sore spot last before I should worry?

Most mouth ulcers clear within a week or two once the cause is removed. The NHS advises seeing a dentist or GP for any ulcer that lasts longer than 3 weeks, because a long-lasting ulcer is sometimes a sign of mouth cancer. See someone sooner if it is unusually large, bleeds or becomes more painful and red.

Can a dentist in Side repair my denture during my holiday?

It depends on the damage and on how many days you have left. Some problems, such as a sore spot or a clasp, can be dealt with quickly; others need laboratory work or a new denture. The dentist tells you what is possible within your stay after seeing it. Send photos on WhatsApp +90 530 575 47 18, answered at any hour.

Would an implant-retained denture stop this happening?

It can make a lower denture more stable. A 2021 meta-analysis of 8 studies found that a lower denture held by two implants scored better than a conventional denture for satisfaction, comfort, speech and stability, but not for hygiene or appearance. Implants take months to heal, so it is a plan for after the holiday, not a quick fix.
